Population

Xiamen's population totaled 5.31 million as of the end of 2022, with the urbanization rate increasing to 90.19 percent. The municipal birth rate was 7.56 births per 1,000 and the death rate was 3.4 per 1,000. The natural population growth rate was 4.16 per 1,000, down by 1.12 permillage points year on year. There were 2.93 million people with registered permanent residence in Xiamen, 87.6 percent of which were urban registered ones with 2.57 million in total, and 45.0 percent of which were from Siming and Huli districts, totaling 1.32 million. In terms of gender from those registered population, the male and female population reached 1.42 million and 1,505.4 thousand respectively, with sex ratio of 94.63 (the female is 100, male to female). 

People's Living Standard

In 2023, the city's per capita disposable income was 67,999 yuan in total, an increase of 5.7 percent over the previous year. Specifically, the per capita wage income was 48,144 yuan, up by 5.4 percent; the per capita NOI (net operating income) was 5,829 yuan, up by 5.0 percent; the per capita net property income was 8,944 yuan, increasing by 9.4 percent; and the per capita net transfer income was 5,083 yuan, up by 2.5 percent. Meanwhile, the per capita living expenditure for all citizens reached 43,970 yuan, up by 5.6 percent year on year. 

The region's per capita disposable income of urban residents went up 4.9 percent to 70,467 yuan, of which the per capita wage income rose by 4.6 percent to 50,079 yuan; the per capita NOI (net operating income) increased 5.5 percent to 5,731 yuan; the per capita net property income went up 8.3 percent to 9,453 yuan; and the per capita transfer net income grew by 1.2 percent to 5,205 yuan. The annual per capita living expenditure for urban residents amounted to 45,165 yuan,up by 5.0 percent.

The region's per capita disposable income of rural residents went up 8.1 percent to 32,323 yuan. To be specific, the per capita wage income of rural residents rose 7.7 percent to 20,175 yuan; the per capita NOI (net operating income) increased 4.1 percent to 7,245 yuan; the per capita net income went up 7.6 percent to 1,585 yuan; and the per capita transfer net income increased 21.3 percent to 3,317 yuan. The annual per capita living expenditure for rural residents topped 26,696 yuan, an increase of 6.6 percent against the previous year. 

Employment 

The year had seen 176.9 thousand people newly employed in urban areas. By the end of 2022, The registered unemployment in urban areas totaled 52.6 thousand . 

Social Insurance 

As of the end of 2022, there were 5.37 million people participating in basic pension insurance program, 2.91 million participating in work-related injury insurance program and 2.87 million participating in unemployment insurance program, with a respective increase of 10.8%, 6.3% and 6.3% year on year. Of which 3.25 million  employees from out of town were covered by basic pension insurance, 1.84 million were covered by work-related injury insurance and 1.82 million were covered by unemployment insurance, with an increase of 16.5%, 7.0% and 6.6% respectively, altogether generating as much as 26.01 billion yuan in revenue and 23.79 billion in expenditure in the aspect of social insurance fund.

There were 30 work-related injury insurance designated medical institutions, five auxiliary appliance configuration institutions and 11 rehabilitation institutions. In the whole year, 35.8 thousand people had received unemployment insurance indemnities worth of 366 million yuan and 435.1 thousand retirees were enjoying social management services. The city had a social management coverage of 100% and community management rate of 100 percent.

Social Insurance 

By the end of the year, the total number of people covered by basic medical insurance was 4.71 million, of which 2.8 million were covered by maternity insurance, up 2.9% and 3.4% over the previous year respectively. 1.76 million of employees from out-of-town were participating in basic medical insurance, an increase of 3.2% over the end of the previous year. The basic medical insurance fund generated 16.6 billion yuan in revenue and 13.84 billion yuan in expenditure, with a cumulative balance of 32.74 billion yuan over the years.

There were 31 work-related injury insurance designated medical institutions, three auxiliary appliance configuration institutions and seven rehabilitation institutions. In the whole year, 38.1 thousand people had received unemployment insurance payment of 354 million yuan and 388.8 thousand retirees had enjoyed social management services. Xiamen has 720 designated medical institutions and 1,295 designated retail pharmacies for medical security. Thirty institutions for the elderly had internal medical ones listed in the designated agreement management of medical insurance and 293 village health centers with integrated management were open to the public for free. A total of 246 million yuan was allocated to 1.35 million people for medical assistance.

Social welfare and Assistance

101 thousand households and 154.2 thousand people with low income were covered subsistence allowance worth of 147 million yuan in total. Of which 97.86 million were for 100.3 thousand low-income urban residents and 49.47 million were for 53 thousand rural ones. Xiamen had also allocated 30.95 million yuan of temporary relief funds to 5.57 people in need, including 2,145 vagrants and beggars, 103 of which were juveniles. The city had 47 elderly service institutions with 12,324 beds available, of which seven public pension institutions (including public and private) provided a total of 2,528 beds and 40 private institutions provided 9,796 ones.
